About

I started blogging around 2004 under the name Geekymom. I chose that name because I was both a geek who loved video games and technology (still do) and I was a relatively new mom. I am also a writer. When I started blogging, I was in a new city, had a new job and was fairly lonely. Technology had always helped me connect to others, from the early days of email and bulletin boards to IRC and chat and blogging. Now we have Twitter X and Facebook and Instagram and Tiktok and Snapchat and everything else, but in 2004, none of these existed and Facebook was still relegated to college campuses.

I started on Blogger and eventually moved to WordPress on my own server. I have had many iterations of this blog. I wrote every day for about 8 years. As life got busy and social media shifted, my blogging slowed down. Eventually, I was down to blogging every month or so. When I decided I wanted to restart, I found my blog had disappeared. The website was still there but I could not retrieve my old blog. So I just restarted. And here I am.

I just left an incredibly demanding job at the end of June 2023. I think the best way to describe where I am now is in recovery. I was completely burned out. Writing and tinkering with technology are creative outlets for me. That blogging as writing often involves tinkering with technology gives me the best of both worlds. As I recover and find my center again, I plan to keep writing and tinkering. I can’t promise the regularity of 2004, but right now, I’m aiming for once a week. If I have more to say, then I will write more. But if living through COVID and the last few years of my rollercoaster life have taught me anything, it’s that plans can change and while routines help things feel stable, sometimes they go out the window. So I’ll try. It’s the best I can do.

I have revived my oldest posts from 2004-2009, but everything past 2009 is pretty much gone. If I somehow can dig those posts out of the digital garbage can, I will, but I have a feeling they’re gone forever.
